Education

Sharing chamber music’s power to inspire, delight, and unite is at the core of the Bayberry String Quartet. From chamber music workshops to school ensembles, the BSQ engages with the community through a variety of educational initiatives

Workshops

The BSQ members met through PhoenixPhest, a chamber music workshop and institute that BSQ violist Gabe ran for more than two decades. Since becoming a formal group, the BSQ has continued giving weekend chamber music workshops, where musicians of all ages and levels come together to explore chamber music principles, such as communication and teamwork, through working on chamber music repertoire. The BSQ proceeded with these workshops during the pandemic, where it served as a national leader of online music-making with its P2V program.

Institutes

The BSQ has enjoyed various summer residencies, where it works with intermediate and advanced string and piano players. Similar to its weekend workshops, the BSQ goes beyond the score in these residencies, teaching fundamentals of music-making and collaboration through the study of chamber music repertoire. Institutes have included the Chicago Suzuki Institute, Peaks to Plains Advanced Student Program, and PhoenixPhest (now Education for Happiness).

School Programs

From enabling the youngest ears to hear stringed instruments for the first time to discussing career paths with budding professional players, the BSQ looks forward to engaging with school children through classroom visits and school-wide assemblies. The BSQ tailors its school visits to the individual needs of the program that it serves, priding itself on interactive, engaging programs that are crafted with care and presented with energy and enthusiasm.
